TYPES OF BREAST IMPLANTS
Implant can be broadly classified as SALINE and SILICONE breast implants depending on its contents.
Saline implants have saline (salt water) solution inside the pliable silicon shell. Saline implants were extensively used prior to USFDA approval for cohesive gel implants. Saline breast implants are very safe, but have shown long term problems of rippling and deflation.
Silicon implants are available in the round or circular (most commonly used) as well as the anatomic or ‘teardrop’ shape. We use only US FDA approved Silicon implants.

BREAST AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE
Performed under general anesthesia, breast enhancement surgery takes about 2 hours to complete. Implants are inserted in any of the following locations-
1. Underneath the gland called sub glandular
2. Beneath the muscle known as sub muscular
3. Both below the muscle (upper half of the implant) and below the gland (lower half of the implant) known as Dual plane.
The doctor decides to create a specific pocket after taking into consideration the tissue character of breasts and type of implant.
INCISION FOR BREAST AUGMENTATION
Infra mammary crease approach and the circum areaolar approach are most frequently used for breast augmentation by surgeons all over the world.
Infra mammary crease incision is a well hidden portion of breast, infra mammary crease approach is the most favored by both doctors and patients. A 5 -7 cm incision is made under the breast in such a way that final scar falls in a natural crease below the breast and fades away in the due course of time.
Circum areaolar incision makes use of natural color interface of nipple and breast skin for hiding the scar since incision is made in the lower half circle of the nipple or areola. The advantage in this approach is that the final scar blends in well in the natural color interface of the areola and breast skin.

- It is normal to feel slight discomfort, stretch, swelling and bruising after the surgery.
- Most women resume light daily activities after 24 hours or so. Desk job can be resumed in 3-4 days time.
- Diminished sensation over the breast is expected and it goes away in a fortnight or so.
- You can take normal shower of bath after 3 days
- Their are two follow ups required 1st followup is after 2-3 days for general inspection and 2nd followup is on 7th day for suture removal
COMPLICATIONS AFTER BREAST SURGERY
Collection of serous fluid or blood, infection, sensory alteration, wrongly positioned implants are some of the complications post breast enlargement surgery.
These are rare and can be easily resolved at the clinic.
Infection after the breast treatment is less than 1% for which course of antibiotic prescribed by the doctor suffices. If infection persists, then implant are removed and reinserted after a few weeks once infection has been taken care of.
In some cases, capsular contraction may occur at a later date wherein body forms a capsule around the implant. This capsule may thicken and disfigure the implant.
