There Are Four Types Of Rhinoplasty :

1. CLOSED RHINOPLASTY

All incisions are hidden inside the nose with no external scars.

Advantages:

  • No external visible incision or scar.
  • Less post operative oedema
  • Less surgical time
  • Faster recovery

Disadvantages:

  • Major changes in the nasal tip and the septal cartilage cannot be done.
  • Used only for minor dorsal corrections.

All Rhinoplasty procedures are not the same. The procedure differs from case to case depending upon individual requirement.

Rhinoplasty in Punjab is a technically demanding surgery and there is no tailor made steps to be followed in every case. To achieve optimal result, a surgeon should be well versed with the different techniques involved in Rhinoplasty.

After the initial decision to undergo Rhinoplasty, the next step is to decide which type of Rhinoplasty procedure is best in your case.

2. OPEN RHINOPLASTY

A small external incision is made at skin between nostrils called as columella. This incision is extended inside nostrils on each side.

The skin flap is elevated and a surgeon gets a good exposure of the bony and cartilaginous framework underneath and modify them under direct vision.

  • It is the preferred method for Rhinoplasty in cases where extensive work is to be done to alter nasal framework.
  • It is used for major and precise nose reshaping.
  • It allows a surgeon to perform many useful techniques with more accuracy such as nasal tip modifications, spreader flap technique, harvesting of septal cartilage etc. and much more.

3. SECONDARY OR REVISION RHINOPLASTY

  • It is a corrective Rhinoplasty done to change the form and / or function of nose after previous Rhinoplasty.
  • The patients opt for a revision rhinoplasty if they are unhappy with the results or they seek further changes not originally desired.
  • Sometimes a patient desires a “touch up” for minor issues.
  • Most trained surgeons have a revision rate of about 10%.

4. LIQUID RHINOPLASTY OR NON-SURGICAL RHINOPLASTY

It is a non surgical method done by a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist for minor imperfections.

No incisions are made and a Hyaluronic Acid Filler injection is used. The most common type of filler used is Juvederm.

The drawback of choosing filler Rhinoplasty is that the results are not permanent. Over the time, the fillers eventually absorb reversing the changes and may require an additional procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH TYPE OF RHINOPLASTY IS SUITABLE FOR ME?
A right surgeon would explain the surgical aspects to the patient or client, along with limitations of each type of Rhinoplasty for the desired outcome.
WHICH IS THE MORE AFFORDABLE TYPE OF RHINOPLASTY?
The costs of Rhinoplasty vary as per the desired outcome.
IS OPEN RHINOPLASTY BETTER THAN CLOSED RHINOPLASTY?
It depends upon the desired outcome. Closed Rhinoplasty is often the choice for minor cosmetic changes, while Open Rhinoplasty is for significant alterations, including those for improving breathing.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE ANY RHINOPLASTY SURGERY, AND WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME?
Usually, the procedure lasts for anything from one and a half hours to three hours. Recovery time from any of the surgery-related effects is less than a fortnight. These are outpatient procedures. The person undergoing surgery can notice the desired outcome in less than 6 months.
ARE ANY OF THE TYPES OF RHINOPLASTY COVERED BY INSURANCES?
Insurances cover only Functional Rhinoplasty, if at all. Some may cover the reconstruction of the nose or part of it following an accident.
HOW LONG DOES THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF RHINOPLASTY LAST?
The effect of Filler Rhinoplasty lasts only for six to twelve months. All other types of Rhinoplasty offer permanent results.
ARE THERE SPECIALISTS FOR OPEN AND CLOSED RHINOPLASTY?
Any plastic surgeon can do either of these surgeries. There is no need for any specialists, and there are none. However, Dr. Vikas Gawri does rope in other surgeons with experience in treating breathing problems as and when there is the likelihood of the cosmetic and functional Rhinoplasties being performed simultaneously.
CAN A SURGEON IN REGULAR HOSPITALS PERFORM COSMETIC RHINOPLASTY?
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty requires specialization in understanding the effects of any carving of the bones or cartilages on the appearance. Surgeons other than the plastic surgeons are not focused on appearance, so they may not be able to improve appearance.
DO SCARS OF OPEN RHINOPLASTY DISAPPEAR OVER A PERIOD?
A good plastic surgeon ensures that the scar remains inconspicuous. There are creams now that do help in fading these scars, but the bottom line is, these scars do not disappear completely.
